Creating a World Premiere Event for 'Pink Card'

EXPERIENTIAL  |  VIDEO PRODUCTION

How do you launch a highly anticipated new podcast? Align it to an urgent news cycle, bring on all-star talent and gather a rapturous audience for a live multimedia talkback with the creators.

ESPN’s 30 For 30 brought this challenge to work x work for the premiere of their series Pink Card, an audio documentary telling the story of the daring women who for decades have defied Iran’s ban on women entering soccer stadiums. Set against the backdrop of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the revolutionary uprising in Iran, work x work adapted this highly of-the-moment podcast to the stage, and rolled out the carpet at On Air Fest in Los Angeles. Watch the video here.

Pink Card is the first solo podcast from Peabody Award-winning host and executive producer Shima Oliaee (Radiolab, Dolly Parton’s America) and the first project from Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe’s Production Company A Touch More. While on the surface, Pink Card is a story about soccer, much like other 30 For 30 projects, it ties into bigger narratives about feminism and geopolitics.

To drum up anticipation for the series, work x work interviewed Shima and targeted the conversation to industry audiences in tandem with the ESPN announcement. We then crafted a multimedia behind-the-scenes premiere timed with On Air Fest at KCRW in LA. The event wove together first-listen audio, photos from reporting trips, and a conversation between Shima and podcast creator James Kim, all in front of a captive audience of podcast fans and creatives.
